While I was in Singapore over the past year. I noticed many of you guys sing this song called "Make a Difference" in Christian circles. What does this part of the song mean?
"We want to run to the altar, to catch the fire..."
If you guys know who wrote it, and under what circumstances this song, Make a Difference, was written please tell me. If you could give me as much context as possible, it would be hugely appreciated!
(For those of you who need a refresher the entire song goes:
Won't you Lord, take a look at our hands
Everything we have, use it for Your plans......)
Thanks a lot guys.
Sam

i believe the song was writte by our dear Bro Poh (Teo Poh Heng).
what i've heard was the song was written during the time when city harvest church was about to launch the "Church Without Wall" campaign.
This song is now widely spread all over the world. even in my church here in Brisbane, we sing the song sometimes. _________________ - Chris |

I think the line means to catch the vision of evangelism that God has for us. And the only way we can do that is to run to the altar, where God is, to be fired up for evangelism. |

The History:
This song was written after Pastor Bill Wilson, a sunday school preacher, came to singapore to share obout his children church ministry in Brooklyn, USA. His message's main theme was talking about "making a difference". He shared from Numbers 16.
The people of Israel was rebelling against the leadership of Moses and Aaron. So God wants to destroy the rebellious people, despite attempts by Moses to appease God. When God began to send a plague to destroy the people, Moses instructed Aaron to take a censer and run to the altar to get the incense lighted by fire, and then run to the congregation (who are being plagued) to make an atonement for them.
As Aaron ran to the altar, caught the fire onto the incense and ran to "catch" up with the plague, where he stood with that offering, "between the living and the dead" (Num 16:48), the plague stop.
The story tells us that just one person (in the case above, Aaron), is enough to make a difference in many people's life. We need to go to the altar and "catch the fire", just as Aaron did, and stand in between the lost, the people who are in need, and intercede for them before God.
After Pst Bill Wilson message, this song was written by Bro Poh Heng (one of his best song to date), and was sang during our launch of the "Church Without Walls" campaign, where we sought to bring the church out of the four walls of the church building, and go into the community to touch the lives of the less fortunate people ("to stand in the gap"). There begins our community services ministry, which later gave birth to our non-profit organisation - City Harvest Community Services Association.
I understand that this song was also sang and favoured a lot by Pst Lawrence Khong and his church, FCBC - because it also describe their church vision of reaching out to the community.
Hope this helps. _________________ Stop starring at my siggy! |

Thanks so much guys. That is indeed a very meaningful song. We were singing it here in Canada -- at least when I lead ppl, and just wanted a more deeper understanding. I was reading Numbers 16 and it's putting so much more context to the chorus. _________________ Gear:

I think Bro Poh will be simply delighted to hear his song being sang all the way in Canada after so many years. _________________ Carrying the Presence of God..... |

I'm interested in hearing this song, anyone got an mp3 they could link me too? Even a crude recording would be nice.
Thanks

Only because you guys have been so helpful. Here's a link to it. I slapped on my guitar and mic so it's nothing fancy and just fed it into my computer.

Still meditating on that song and how to make that real in life. Take care.

| its amazing how far music can travel..to canada, australia...wow!! but seems that there are slight variations. Sam sang in a slightly slower beat, not very sure but it sounds different from what we sang here, but equally good... =) always liked this worship song...solid song..!! |

Thanks WuiPing.. so that's how it REALLY goes. =) That's not how Canadians where I am are going to sing it since I've been propagating the "remix" version. I'll try my best to be true to Bro Poh's original version next time I lead worship.
But I notice the variations too. When I lead worship at NTU in Singapore the common songs we sing are slightly different. _________________ Gear:
